San Antonio Travel Giveaway ($950 Value)

I always have a running list of travel destinations I'm plotting to visit. It makes my family's life tricky, as I stockpile books, movies, magazine articles and knowledge about each place on my "bucket" list. Lately, I've been daydreaming about a trip to Texas. Besides the access to unlimited BBQ, I'm interested in the area's rich frontier history and its Spanish Missions. So when the San Antonio Visitor's Bureau asked whether I'd be interested in giving away a San Antonio Vacation Package to one lucky reader, I jumped at the chance!

Well, in San Francisco, I think the BEST family activity is the California Academy of Sciences...who doesn't love a planetarium, aquarium (complete with albino alligator Claude) and Living Roof of thousands of species all rolled into one? Though in such a family-friendly city, it is hard to pick just one activity...

I live in Richmond, Virginia, and I can say that one of the most popular things to do on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon here would be to visit the Carytown shopping area for great food and quirky little shops.

In Flemington, New Jersey, we have Northlandz - the worlds largest model railway. It is tons of fun for kids of all ages!

Just got back from a long weekend in Chicago... Lincoln Park Zoo, free! smaller zoo is great for toddlers & preschoolers, you can come and go to nearby beach, restaurants & shopping at N. Ave & Armitage Ave. Chicago Children's Museum on Navy Pier is the perfect thing to do w/ a 1 & 2 year old on a rainy day (they even put my daughter's clothes in the dryer after she got a little too enthusiastic at the waterworks exhibit). Sunday brunch at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba (spanish tapas in Lincoln Park) was surprising kid friendly, loud enough, great kids menu, even gave them wiki sticks along with the normal crayons, and because the tapas come quickly and throughout your meal there's always something on the table to eat and share.

  5. Darcie - Such The Spot on May 14, 2010 at 7:20 a.m.

Out here in the Old Pueblo (Tucson, Az) one of the most family-friendly activities would be visiting the Tucson children's museum. Or the Saguaro National Park. Be sure to stop by El Charro Cafe after, where they offer $2 kids meals and some of the best Sonoran Mexican food around!

  6. Sara Phillips on May 14, 2010 at 9:50 a.m.

Walla Walla, WA has great family-friendly places - Fort Walla Walla, Whitman Mission and the city park! They also have Iceburg (a milk shake place) and it's SOOOOO GOOD!! :)

It's a little known fact that Frank L.Baum wrote the Wizard of Oz in Coronado. Apparently the library there has a stained glass window depicting Dorthy and her friends. On my "bucket list" this summer is to watch the movie, then visit Coronado to take a peak.

In Highland Village, Texas (north of Dallas - close to Lewisville), I highly recommend visiting the Shops at Highland Village. This is an open-air shopping center with several great restaurants (Patrizio's, The Blue Goose, etc...), a large Barnes & Noble bookstore, many clothing stores, several spas, Bath & Body Works, Nestle Tollhouse, and much more. Our favorite thing to do is have lunch on the patio at Patrizio's and watch families play around the beautiful fountain in the center of the shopping center.

  24. Susan Bentley on May 15, 2010 at 7:39 a.m.

In the Fort Worth area there is so much to do. However, our favorite "get away/hideaway" is the Eagle Mountain Park on Boat Club Road. Chilren can learn about native plants to teh area, look and take pictures near the "town", and families can take one of many dirt hiking trails. We took our jogging stroller, got muddy, yet enjoyed teh terrain, fresh air, overlook of the lake, and beauty of the animals. Bikes are not allowed.

I live in Central PA. The one place I went to recently that I would recommend would be Gettysburg. The town is so cute, lots of little shops, places to eat and museums. They have tours where you can sit in your car with a little device explaining what you're looking at, just in case baby is sleeping you won't have to leave the car and still get all the info you need on the site you're touring.

I live in Columbus, IN (an hour south of Indy) and if you're ever passing through town on I-65, you must stop and eat at Zaharako's, an original ice cream shop and soda foundtain that they have completely restored. Food and treats are great, and its right next door to a small children's museum, called KidsCommons, if your kids need to burn off all that sugar!

My 18 month is able slide down the slides all by herself. Its a great place to spend the afternoon with your children. and its reasonably priced.

Well, if you are in San Antonio and you have an extra day to play around, go northwest of town a little ways to Bandera, TX... it's called the Cowboy Capital of the World! You'll find it is in one of the prettiest parts of the Texas Hill Country! Lush rolling hills, limestone outcroppings, over clear and pristine spring fed creeks, rivers and Medina Lake all make up the land in the area. Summer time is great fun with rodeos every weekend! There are great "dude ranches" and REAL cowboys and cowgirls galore! It's totally family friendly and only about 30 minutes outside of San Antonio.

  127. Holly Kurth on May 18, 2010 at 12:44 p.m.

OH! And a great place to eat, NOT on the San Antonio riverwalk is in Old' Town... Mi Tierra's. Even though some people feel it is touristy, well, it is true, honest, home cooking at its best. It is a family owned business that thrives from morning until night. It is a feast for the tummy and the eyes. Kiddos love it. AND the food is super. We love breakfast there and the Carne Gisada (sp?) is wonderful! Also, they have a beautiful bakery set up too where there are beautiful colors to see and flavors to taste. It is surrounded by the El Marcado where vendors are set up to sell all kinds of goods and there is often live music. Etc. Again, VERY family friendly.

By far, one of my favorite things to do is explore the foothills that surround us here in my part of CA. There's so many fun places to stop on the way to the towns of Sonora, Jamestown, Knight's Ferry--our kids are only 2, 1, and 4 months, but already we love packing into the car and taking the windy roads up towards the mountains and enjoying all the nature along the way. Free and fabulous! :)

If you are interested in seeing handwritten lyrics by the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and many more, plus costumes like Madonna's bullet bra and David Bowie's creations; plus watching historical movie clips and checking out awesome instruments and all kinds of musical displays, make sure you stop on the North Coast this summer!
