Have I ever confessed that I don't love taking my kids to the beach? The risk of big waves or undertow & the bright sun's reflection on the white sand make it more stressful than I'd like. When we were staying at the Honua Kai Resort, the Valet pulled me aside one morning and said "I'll tell you where to go." Just down the road a little bit, in a residential neighborhood, we found the place locals call "baby beach." It's where families go when the kids are old enough to enjoy the beach, but too young to swim. A lagoon keeps the big waves out, and there's plenty of shade where the kids can take a break from the sun during snack time. Eilan napped under a shady tree, and I read a book while Everest and Darya played with my husband in the sand and calm water. Perfect!

I was always nervous on beaches when my kids were young too. (Actually even though they are older and very strong swimmers I'm still nervous about big waves and undertows.) It's nice to find a beach that's good for families.

I was so happy to find a few of these baby beaches when we stayed in Lahaina when Dek was 5 months old. As a new mom I was terrified to even put him near the water with rough waves. I found one by accident as I walked out of Lahaina early one morning (if you look at the water, go right till you hit houses and see the sign for public beach access.) There was a great one south of Lahaina along the main road. Saw a woman swimming with a seal. It was crazy!

Those beaches are hard to find, but yeah anything to take away stress at the beach is worth finding.
