The Children's Museum of San Diego has reopened in the summer of 2008 with a new name and in a new location. The center's focus is on art education, and art studios allow kids to get seriously messy with activities like "action painting" and clay. There's even a VW Bug to use as a canvas. The museum is designed for all ages and hosts both free-play areas and scheduled classes. There is also an outdoor play area.
There is an indoor/outdoor cafe with food provided by Organic to Go.

So, we visited the San Diego New Children's Museum this weekend - it's just OK. It's more of an art museum that is kid-friendly. Definitely geared more for grade-schoolers, and I felt I had to be fairly vigilant to make sure my toddler didn't get bonked, pinched or poked by exhibits and the bigger kids. She had a good time, but the activities are mainly: painting, drawing with chalk, using clay, flipping switches to make noises and lights turn off and on, blowing bubbles, and playing with puzzles - which is pretty much just like playing at home. May be worth it on free days (but parking is $10) but for 2 parents to take their child on any other day, it would be $30 admission, which is pretty steep. If you're traveling to San Diego, there are many more entertaining and less expensive ways to spend the afternoon. I'm interested to hear what other people think about this museum, especially versus other Children's museums.
