Even if your kids are too young to understand what a jail is, a trip to Alcatraz can be interesting and fun. Most kids enjoy the ferry ride on San Francisco Bay and the flowers and birds on the island. Daytime tours are self-guided and you can go at whatever pace works for you and your kids. For older kids, this is a great way to understand a part of our history first-hand.

School age kids may also enjoy getting a copy of the "Junior Ranger booklet" from staff at the dock and following the steps to become a Junior Park Ranger.

As with much of San Francisco, be careful of the weather! It can be gorgeous when you go and freezing when you return. Just be careful to pack accordingly, esp. for little ones, esp. for trips that involve being out on the water.

But I lived in SF for years and always joined visitors on this trip! It's truly fun for all ages -- and scenic to boot!

Thinking of bringing a two and a half year old...crazy or fun? Stroller or baby carrier considering the terrain?
    Thanks for the feedback!

A stroller should be fine - here's a helpful link that will give you more info about the terrain:

I agree a stroller will help! Make sure to get there early and in good season. Depending on the weather and attendance it may be hard to find tickets. Be sure to book them in advance. For more information on Alcatraz, check out the following article:
