The Kohala coast is dotted with great beaches and world-class resorts. Occasionally they even overlap! All beaches in Hawaii are public, but sometimes family-types are made to feel somewhat unwelcome in the posh hotel surroundings. Not at the Mauna Lani Resort! The free public-access beach is the ultimate kid friendly ("keiki") beach-- calm, clear shallow waters, a swath of soft (thorn-free!) white sand, basking turtles-- and even plush couch-like tent contraptions that you can spread out a picnic under. My 15 month old loves the water, the coral rocks, the fishes, the tents, and the ocean-side pool. Not bad for a free day at the beach!
