Port Townsend and Kingston, WA, Washington

Port Townsend, located at the north end of Olympic National Park, is a common overnight stop on the way to visit the Olympic National Park's rain forest. It has much to recommend it as a family getaway from Seattle, and you can either relax while the kids play on the beach or explore the town and Fort Worden.

The Clam Cannery is conveniently located in the heart of Port Townsend's historic center. The building (which really is an old Clam Cannery) was entirely gutted and reworked into four studio and 1-bedroom suites in 2009. Each features a custom full-sized kitchen (complete with pots, utensils and even spices), a washer and dryer and many custom touches. The building is built over the water, and each room has a beautiful view. The hotel is set up to use Netflix Streaming and Amazon Video on Demand for movies. CB's is a family owned small-batch nut roaster. From the small shop, you can peek into the "factory" where the nuts are roasted. This is a great place to pick up a snack for the road. The shop sells freshly ground peanut butter, cookies, and of course, roasted nuts. Samples are available, and if you happen to have good timing, you might even walk away with warm nuts roasted that day. more

This small bakery has expanded in recent years to deliver bread to local markets. There is a small cheese case featuring local cheeses and fresh eggs. Skip the baguettes and buy the Cheese Sticks or the whole wheat offerings. Sweet pastries are also quite good, and I loved the chocolate stuffed figs. more
