Tulum Ruins, Playa del Carmen

Address Route 307 Tulum, Mexico Map, Website

Just two hours (maybe a little less) south of Cancun, these ruins are accessible (stroller-friendly if you're creative) and covered with scampering lizards. They must be the easiest ancient ruins to get to from the US, and I'd say kids 5 and older might appreciate the antiquity. (Our trip was with two babies and a 3-year-old, who had a meltdown.) Bring your swimsuits--the beach below is pretty amazing. Even the little ones appreciate the white sand and blue, blue sea.

Tulum is a very safe place to travel with kids, the ruins are small and easy to visit and the beaches are just the best.
