Beautiful zoo with outstanding landscaping (think grafted orchids) in large walkways, and several AC indoor exhibits (such as pandas, koalas, penguins) provide a break from the heat. Take the "zoo train" to see more with less exertion. No zoo smells (I confess to being worried with the heat). I am not an animal expert, but the animal conditions seemed fine, and visitors were respectful. One of the best parts of the visit for a mother with her 2 1/2 year old was that the rest facilities near the main entrance include toddler-sized potties! Bring a stroller with sunshade, and if it's sunny, an umbrella to block sun heat for older folks. There is a McDonalds near the main entrance, but it's to the side and can be avoided. You are not forced through any animal/zoo merchandising exhibits (as with many US zoos, esp. those featuring pandas) following the viewing of certain animals. We would definitely go back, with or without a child in tow.
