You can take a ferry to the island which is full of history. A lighthouse, wildlife, a day in the Florida sun, a calm boat ride on a ferry ($15), ferry leaves from Fort Desoto with a lot of history as well, a picnic, fishing, dolphin sitings, snorkling you can accomplish a lot with one day's outing. Camping at Fort Desoto as well as a great dog park.
