This amazing gem of an art museum is really in Toledo, OH! It has beautiful galleries and a brand new glass museum, plus, it's always FREE! What makes it spectacular for kids is their Family Center. Located on the bottom floor, near the back, it is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The Family Center is made up of 2 rooms: one devoted to the craft project of the week and easels for painting, and one a huge playroom with great developmentally outstanding toys. It's a great place on its own, using it as a base to introduce young children to art museums is fantastic. When parking, tell the attendant you are going to the Family Center and your parking will be free, too! There tables and vending machines in the hallway outside the rooms, so you can pack a lunch and eat there as well. Toledo is an hour from Detroit and a great stop on cross-country trips on I-90.
