This is a great place for adults who love history (um, I'm talking about my in-laws) and families with small children (that's us). There are plenty of building for children to explore and the grounds are beautiful. The tour of the main house can be a bit long. We took turns and the one who was not in line played in the huge front yard of the big house which overlooks the Potomac River. Great photo ops! We pack snacks and have lunch on the lawn.
In the past year, they have opened what is supposed to be an interactive museum.
There are a few negatives I feel compelled to mention:
Admission is pricey compared to the free attractions in DC.
It's not public transportation accessible.
