Henry Vilas Zoo, Madison

Address 702 South Randall Avenue, Madison, WI Map, Tel (608) 266-4733 Call, Website

This is a wonderful zoo with free admission! In addition to a wide variety of animals the zoo has a newly built children's play area and an indoor carousel. Right outside of the zoo is a beautiful park with more play areas, a lake and just across the street is the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.

This is the perfect zoo for children of all ages. It is free and it's small enough to see in less than 2 hours, yet it has all the animals you'd expect at a larger zoo. Grizzly bears, lions, tigers, orangutans, penguins, polar bears, rhinos, giraffes, monkeys, snakes, birds, etc. It's very easy to find--just a few blocks south of Camp Randall (the UW-Madison football stadium)-- and easy to get in and out of. And even if you have lunch with your kids you can spend all day there and not spend a fortune. Admission is free. Parking is free. The concession stand doesn't offer a lot of healthy options, but it's cheap and easy. If you forget your stroller you can rent them there, and they also rent big wagons if you have more than one tired child or a youngster in a carseat carrier.
