Burning Question: What Do Your Kids Listen To In The Car?

Sigh...
Sigh...

With E and D in different schools this year, we are spending a lot of time in the car. Every day feels like a mini-road trip, and believe me it's challenging having three tired kids squeezed in the back of my small station wagon. I have tons of travel toys that will now migrate into the car, but we also need something new to listen to as we roll along...

Do you have favorite "books on CD," music, or other audio entertainment that you use for road trips? Let me know in Comments.

We normally just listen to country or showtunes, whether my daughter is in the car or not. But we also have one toddler cd that we use that is fabulous- The Discovery Toys "Sounds Like Fun" cd. It's great for calming my daughter down. And it's very educational too.

We love Laurie Berkner because even the grumpiest parent can tolerate her folksy kid music. I also have a bunch of Disney movie music cds and we belt out "Part of this World" or "Be Our Guest" on a regular basis. You can buy compilation cds that have all sorts of Disney music from old to new. When I was looking for new books on cd, someone pointed me to audiblekids.com. Their prices are reasonable and you can listen to a preview to see if your kids would enjoy it. My kids have loved every one so far!

My family is known for having some quirks and not the least of those is probably that my toddler loves KISS. No matter how he's feeling, putting on the KISS Greatest Hits album makes him stop in his tracks and start singing, dancing and drumming. We listen to that in the car on road trips until he falls asleep, then we put our own music on.

I also have three kids (all boys) 6, 4 and 2 yo. We enjoyed at one time Laurie Berkner. Right now we're listening to TMBG latest CD "Here comes science" (it comes with a DVD with phenomenal music videos). They also enjoy non-kid music, especially the soothing melodies of Jack Johnson and catching sounds of Shakira :)

We love the Magic Treehouse series. The kids are so excited to hear what happens next in the story that they actually can't wait to get back into the car.

My son loves "Little Bear" on tape, among others. Our library has lots of audiobooks, and so we try out new ones occasionally.

We have a kids mp3 player for him, and he can listen to audiobooks or music whenever he wants. It takes SD cards, so we have a number of different cards for different occasions. http://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-Shaker-... Very portable, and we also have a lullaby disk that we play on it, which is a portable part of his nighttime routine.

My son & I love to jam out to "Choo Choo Soul"! It's absolutely the best songs set to a really cool hip hop beat. We make it really fun and he learns ABCs, animal sounds, all sorts of fun things!

Like you, we have kids of different ages, so audio books sometimes don't work. Instead, I download books onto my middle son's MP3 player, and he listens with headphones while we play something else on the stereo. My oldest can read in the car, lucky thing! Our favorite CDs for the whole family are KidsBop (actually, I hate those, but they're fun and fast and the kids enjoy them!) and Go Fish. Go Fish's music has a Christian theme, but is quite bearable for parents. We also listen to a lot of Broadway albums.

I am so with you! I have REALLY been missing having both girls at the same preschool, and I can't believe how many miles we're putting on... within a 10 mile radius? What we listen to varies. Often it's the baby crying!

I probably will be 'Bad Mom' of the year award. My kids listen to Kidz Bop World CDs collection that we got from McDonald kids meal. There are total of 8 and we got all of them. Guess the truth is out that we do visit McD more often than I want to admit. :)

Favourite driving music has been and always will be Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Crosby Stills and Nash and Credence Clearwater. My son loves it too, I suppose that's what happens when you feed a child with the music you like from before birth. When he was a baby, if we had difficulties in getting him to sleep all we had to do is drive him around listening to Cotton Fields by Credence Clearwater and in a few minutes he was asleep...it had to be that tune, nothing else worked!

Some of our favorites that are on the "kids" section of the iPod:

    Schoolhouse Rock--we have it memorized

They Might Be Giants--Here Come the ABC's; Here Come the 123's--fun and upbeat

Baby Loves Jazz--well-done jazz versions of kid songs

Alabama from the early 90's--for some reason the kids like this as much as we do. They each pick an instrument and "play" along with the songs.

Nickel Creek Band--old cowboy songs that are well-done--wish they had more!

We have a ton more and shuffle through them so it's not monotonous.

Books on CD from the library--depends on what they kids are interested in at the time. Betsy-Tacy and Boxcar Children were recent hits.

The Curious George Soundtrack (by Jack Johnson) is GREAT. And, not just for kids...

Music is great, but I've also found that books-on-tape (cd/ipod) are a great way to introduce your children to authors and stories which are way above their reading level. In my house, when the child's reading ability catches up, those are the books they then wanted to read.
My now 9yo got hooked on Corneila Funke's DragonRider when he was about 5 and has since read all her books. Classics such as the Wind In The Willows worked well.
If you want short stories which start + finish during one trip, my boys loved Amos + Boris and my 3yo nephew is currently hooked on Charlie + Lola.

I sing my favorite music in a kid way or make up songs about smelly feet, where we are or driving. I've done it for a 7 hour car trip through the boring Arabian desert. I used to do this in University and my best friend found it horrible, but my husband thinks it's funny... so check it out with your significant other before you decide to sing in the car. I'm hoping when my little guy gets older, he'll sing along and make up verses on his own.

We also listen to Laurie Berkner and the Curious George Soundtrack, as well as Justin Roberts and the Wicked soundtrack ( that one's mostly for mommy :) My 18 month old's favorite though is the soundtrack from Hi 5.

I make song lists on my ipod. For weekend mornings around the house. And for car trips. My goal: be as eclectic as possible. Reggae, Opera, Latin Funk, Classic Rock, Arab ballads, African drums, pop, cello, and sountracks such as Wall-E, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Mis, Jungle Book, Curious George. My 5 year old's current favourites are Cold Play, Peter Gabriel, and Mika. We have so much fun singing our little hearts out. And he learns the lyrics faster than me.

Favourite Audiobooks ... mine is anything "Skippyjon Jones". I LOVE that cat! My Spud loves him too but his very favourite is anything "Magic Treehouse".
