Earth Day Giveaway: 4 Pack of ChicoBags Reusable Shopping Bags

For the past year, I've been carrying around a set of reusable shopping bags in my purse whether I'm at home or on the road. In addition to the obvious use at the supermarket, I've been surprised at how helpful they are when I'm out and about with the kids. I gave up my diaper bag and stroller long ago, so sometimes the kids snacks, discarded jackets, or found "treasures" grow past what I can carry in my purse. When that happens, I whip out one of these compact shopping bags, open it up, and stuff everything inside. So, I'm excited to announce my latest giveaway, just in time for Earth Day, a set of four reusable ChicoBags from TwoKnobbyTires, a website that sells outdoor gear for both kids and adults.

In my opinion, the best place here in Brooklyn to learn about the environment is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. First, because it's a marvelous showcase of nature's beauty--I think the best way to instill in children a desire to preserve the environment is to give them a love of nature. And second, because of all their programs, which include children's gardening, as well as sustainable gardening techniques and urban gardening.

We live in the mountains and very close to the Great Smoky National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have rivers, lakes, forests and so many other nautral resources so kids have so many places to learn about the environment.

I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We are a great metroplex for kids to come and explore with a completely unique experience in each of our 3 major cities. Dallas has a new Audubon Center located in the Great Trinity Forest. It isn't free, but it has 4 miles of trails and a special area for kids, not to mention a LEED certified new center with a green roof and much more. Arlington has the River Legacy park, which has free guided nature tours every Saturday plus lots of trails year round on the 1300 acre property with the Trinity River inter-twining throughout. Fort Worth has the Botanical Gardens just down the street from the Fort Worth Zoo. They have 9 different gardens (one more coming soon with plants that conserve water) and lots of kids activities. Most of the gardens are free. There are lots more places, but these are probalby the best.

Tryon Creek State Park in Portland, OR, offers a series of escorted nature hikes for kids that's wonderful.

Also, the Portland Parks & Rec department offers Ladybug hikes for parents and kids in various parks around the city, alternating between weekdays and weekend days during the spring/summer.

Parents are their children's first and best teachers so I think that the best place for children to learn about the environment is any time they're with their parents. Kids learn from example and will enjoy and appreciate anything they see their parents
enjoying and appreciating. This could happen in your own back yard, on a hike--any number of places. Thank you for the contest.

  23. Monica on April 22, 2009 at 1:29 p.m.

Living in Portland, OR, there are so many places for kids to learn about the environment. I love the Audubon Society http://www.audubonportland.org/. There are trails, birds in rehabilitation, planned activities and so forth. A great place for kids to learn and be active, too.

  24. Sue on April 22, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.

I live in a Colorado ski town and learning about the environment is really easy here. Currently ski towns in Colorado are having a contest at the grocery stores to see which one has the most customers using reusable bags. My kids see this every time we go to the grocery store.
Our Discovery Museum teaches the kids to recycle and reuse and to find other ways to use energy. The schools are so great at teaching green living through example.
We have bike to school and work days where it's heavily promoted to leave your car at home. (My kids bike or walk to school anyway, but they do encourage others.)

We have so many places nearby to learn about the environment. Our botanical gardens are getting better every year. We have a world class zoo that has a desert dome as well as a tropical rainforest among many other exhibits. There are numerous recreation areas and Boy and Girl Scout camps that emphasize the environment.

We have curbside recycling, but they don't take a lot of stuff, so I take my kids to the recycling center. They each take one box of recyclable stuff and separate it into the correct bins. I think it helps them learn the importance of recycling by seeing me do it, by doing it themselves, and by seeing all the other people coming there just to recycle.

We have many wonderful parks, and I think the outdoors is the best place to take kids to learn about the environment.
