Camuy Caves is one of the world's largest cave networks. It's filled with wildlife that kids might enjoy like crabs, tarantulas and bats. You'll travel by tram from the park's entrance to the cave entrance by tram, making this an outing that works well even on hot days. Be aware, however, that heavy rains can close the caves (as they did during our trip to Puerto Rico) so you might want to call ahead before visiting. more

This huge fort was built in 1533 by the Spanish as a way to protect San Juan. It took over 150 years to build, and today it is both a world heritage site and a U.S. National Park. Kids will enjoy exploring the fort. Try to get them to imagine the huge squares filled with soldiers, cannons peering out to the sea, and what it would be like to wear a full uniform in the intense Puerto Rican heat. There's lots of room to run here, and some incredible views. more

We didn't have time to visit this Children's Museum on our own trip to San Juan, but the location, the air conditioning, and the variety of kid-focused activities make it seem like a great choice on a rainy or windy day. Be forewarned that the museum's websites and exhibits are all in Spanish. more

It isn't what it sounds like. This children's museum includes a nicely done (if small) aquarium, an indoor amusement park, an ice skating rink, miniature golf, a dinosaur exhibit and a pizza parlor. It's designed for local kids, and we (adults) found it tough to be indoors knowing that we were missing out on Puerto Rico's beaches and sunshine. Still, the kids enjoyed a morning of kid-focused activities, and this makes a nice activity on a rainy day. more
