Re: the Portland guide: One thing I noticed is that many of the admittedly great recommendations are not necessarily for the budget traveller. For shopping, every neighborhood seems to have EXCELLENT consignment stores for clothes and toys. I like Children's Exchange and Picollina in my neighborhood. And Portland has awesome community centers, many with indoor pools, and parks. You can learn more at portlandonline.com. Also, the book Portland Hill Walks has been indispensable for our family--we have learned so much about our city from these books, and the walks are free!

  32. Erika Luke on September 14, 2009 at 12:59 p.m.

I love your kid travel guides - for the city I live in! We just moved here a couple months ago, so it's a great way to find things to do with our son. Also good for looking at our old city when we go back to visit - gives you a fresh perspective on things to do that you might not have thought of or remembered!

My husband and I wanted to get to Portland before baby, now with your kid friendly guide, I know we will have fun. Also your breast feeding advice really helped me feel more comfortable about doing it in public (with a huge cover of course). We just made a successful trip to Phoenix to see my mom and I was comfortable breast feeding the whole time. Remembering that I would never see those people again made it so much easier!

Other good attractions for kids in South Louisiana are:

    The Global Wildlife Center
    Audubon Zoo
    The Aquarium
    Louisiana Children's Museum
    The New Orleans City Park
The Bayou Country Children's Museum (under construction)
    The Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum
Mardi Gras in Houma, LA (much more kid-friendly than in New Orleans)

I think the city guides are great! Each attraction has all the info you would need. I have been able to find hotels/stores I want to check out by looking at their website, calling them, etc. Also, I liked info on where to find baby gear....ie. cheaper diapers at Monoprix in Paris. More of that type of info would be helpful when travelling.

One suggestion for the reader-submitted part of the city guides: create regional categories. I live in Western Massachusetts, and I've submitted a place in Hadley, which is near Northampton and Amherst and kinda near Springfield and the Berkshires. If I were visiting the area and didn't know the little town was nearby, I might assume it's in the Boston area and not even look at it. This could be a cumbersome project to figure out where all these little places are in the big scheme of things, but it could be something that would pay off as the site grows.

For Arizona, I think that Phoenix and Scottsdale should be separated. I appreciate that there are reader-based entries for Tempe and Tucson too - there's a lot more to Arizona than four cities though! Visit http://mesaaz.gov/Visitor/ for information an one of our largest cities with lots of family-friendly and budget-friendly options for a fun winter visit!

I just found your website and really like it. I left a recommendation for you and looked at what you already have. Not much near me, but it's nice to see that we have the chance to add our own ideas. I look forward to suggesting more and seeing what other people think of!

  132. Amy on September 17, 2009 at 5:35 p.m.

I commented in SF but in general, I think some sort of ratings system would be cool. Nt everything would need one, but if I travel and go to a restaurant, for example, it would be nice to have a way to give a quick thumbs up/thumbs down or give it some stars or something.

I also think more links or a consolidated link directory could be nice. And could get YOU more traffic in a quid pro quo kind of thing...

    Love the site!!! Thanks!!!

As a Portlander I appreciate your including our small city, but the listings could be expanded. Many residents make great use of the parks, and I'd love to see visitors check them out too. Three that are very kid friendly are Mt. Tabor (how many other parks are on top of volcanoes?), Laurelhurst (separate playground and pond areas, with lots of room to run around), and Grant Park (in the summer check out the Beverly Cleary fountain with Ramona et al sculptures that kids can touch, sit on, etc). Lots of city parks have wading pools open in the summer. Perfect for a little break with hot and tired little travelers.

How about adding a flickr group album for the cities, or something comparable? People could upload 2-5 photos, or something like that, of pictures in a given city or location. It would be inspiring for people planning trips, and people could comment on photos to ask for more information about something specific.
