Philadelphia Zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo is an easy drive off of the PA turnpike. It is a great place to visit with your kids of all ages or for grandparents to take kids. There are many exhibits and activities. The zoo is celebrating it's 150th anniversary and just opened the brand new McNeilian Aviary Exhibit. My 1 year old daughter greatly enjoyed the large cats exhibits where you can stand right at a clear barrier and she was able to put her hand right up against where the tiger was standing. You can even take a ride on the Channel 6 Zoo Hot Air Balloon. I recommend getting a membership as it is actually almost the same price to be able to go all year as to buy tickets for everyone and parking when you get there. Plus you get special entrance to events like a sleepover in the zoo and discounts in the gift shops. Take a stroller for little ones as it is a lot of walking and remember the hand sanitizer to use before eating at one of the many food stops. more

It is a children's museum that is fully interactive. It includes artwork and sculptures made from reclaimed items, especially old toys, so that children can see that there are more than one use for things. There's a special area that tells all about the environment that is hands on with water play. There are special areas gated off for younger toddlers and infants to scoot around and feel like they are in a "safe," smaller area. This way, they don't feel too overwhelmed. I liked the fact that they included "necessary" items, like aprons, for tasks using paints or waterplay. A cafe with plenty of healthy choices, no worries about allergies, all food prepared is nut free, or you can "brown bag it" with your own snacks and food to eat in the dining areas. Let's not forget the carousel, my daughter's favorite spot. There is something for all ages and all interests, from Alice in Wonderland to outer space, and a small "town" where your kids can be firefighters, doctors, cooks, etc. more

Huge, with several themed play areas for hours of fun. Nice cafe with healthy options. Beautiful indoor carousel that was meticulously restored to it's 1908 condition. more

My three year old can't get enough of this place. It's so great to be somewhere that he's allowed to touch everything and you don't have to be constantly telling him no. I'd imagine that it's super fun at least up to age 5-6. more

This is an old mansion in the park built to be a playhouse for kids! It is only for kids 5 and under. They have 3 floors inside to explore with toys, bikes, etc. It is not air conditioned, FYI. Outside they have an amazing playground (not open in winter) including a 100 year old wooden slide that you slide on in burlap sacks. Check their webiste for details and directions (you can't find it using a GPS). The best part about it is that it's FREE!!! more
