Reader Question: Electrical Outlets on an Airplane
This is a reader question from Brianne:
Do you know if most airplanes have electrical outlets in their bathrooms? I have an electric pump and obviously would need an outlet in order to pump on the plane.
Bathroom electrical outlets, when available, are often marked as being only for use with razors. On some flights, there are also electrical outlets at every seat, and you can usually check the airline website to find out how your flight will be equipped.
Even on a plane equipped with electrical outlets, electrical equipment sometimes fails, and if you need to pump in flight (or at the airport restroom) the most reliable option is to bring along a battery adapter for your pump so that you can use it anywhere.

I always recommend SeatGuru to anyone flying. You can look up your carrier and specific plane, then check which seats have access to in-seat power if you need it. As you say, it does sometimes fail, but if you really need it you can pick your seats to make sure you've got access to power (and what kind of power port it'll be!).

Batteries run out fast - if it were me, I would bring a hand pump along, at least as a backup plan. You never know how long you're going to be stuck on an airplane... They also require less inspection at security.

Good point! I generally carry an extra set of batteries, but a hand pump would be a good backup too.
