Reader Question: Covering an In Flight Bassinet

I just got a question from a reader about how to cover an in-flight bassinet to shield it from flickering lights and video screens. I'll admit, I'm stumped. Does anybody have a clever idea about the best way to do this?

Fly a different airline! There are many airlines who still have the individual tv screens and they usually come out of the armrest rather than being stuck to the wall in the bulkhead. Check out the airline's website for the amenities. I suggest foreign airlines, they also offer free wine to celebrate when the kids finally fall asleep! I suggest Emirates, South African, British airways, Thai, and even some Continental planes (transatlantic/pacific flights out of Newark and Houston) still have individual screens. Emirates so far has been the best airline with kids, they even give you toys and baby food and will play with your kids to give you a bit of a break, great if you are flying solo!

Just flew on Lufthansa yesterday and they attached a 'shade' on the bassinet that shielded the babes face. Otherwise one of those light gauze blankets rigged somehow?!

I'm taking Velcro dots and using them to put a light blanket over the bassinet so it is darker and I get more chance of some sleep ..... Fingers crossed

Use a snoozeshade...they sell them on amazon, ebay, etc...they block out 94% of light, uv rays, and are made of black mesh so very breathable...they make them to fit over car seats, strollers, travel cots, etc...the one for car seats would probablly fit an airline bassinette pretty well...

Fly Babee in Australia makes covers that will clamp onto basinnets and strollers. Pretty pricey though at $100.

Hi - Fly Babee is designed to be an airline bassinet cover. It is 100% breathable, blocks over 97% of light, and is a pop up dome shape meaning that bub doesn't feel too enclosed and can't pull it in. They're great value at $100 because they are dual purpose and fit over strollers and prams as well so bub can sleep safely when you're out and about. www.flybabee.com.au I have one and absolutely love it. We took my 4 week old to Canada and he slept for 12 of the 14 hours under his Fly Babee.
