November 17, 2008 at 5:02 a.m.I always try to make sure I say the date when I first start videoing. I always think I will remember later, but never do. And I try to make sure I say how old, tall, etc the kids are, just for posterity.

November 17, 2008 at 9:31 a.m.never put the camera down because the moment you do, something is going to happen that you wished you had recorded. with a camera this small, it's not hard to keep around.

November 17, 2008 at 10:36 a.m.My tip would be to make sure to hand off the camera every once in a while so you can get in the videos. You don't want your kids to wonder why you "weren't there". Thanks for the giveaway!

November 17, 2008 at 12:15 p.m.Last year, I took my camera to the family get-together. I told them that they can take any pictures they like and I laid the camera down on the table and anyone could pick it up and take pictures. At the end of the night, I went through the pictures and they were great! People have a different way of seeing things through the lens, and now, those pictures are in my Family Holiday photo album!

November 17, 2008 at 12:16 p.m.My favorite tip for documenting my holiday memories is have plenty of film (old school), batteries (new or rechargeable) and or disposable cameras (give one to each person in the family to take pictures during the gathering).
Then develop them and give each of them an album or DVD during your next family holiday to cherish forever.
Carol
November 17, 2008 at 12:18 p.m.My best tip is to try to make people forget your taking videos or pics. Spontaneity always leads to fantastic photos, and it's a technique People Magazine has used since its inception.
joanmurraycefalu
November 17, 2008 at 12:23 p.m.Don't forget to share camera-person duty. Videos and picture from my childhood never included my Dad because he was always behind the lens! :) Have a wonderful Holiday and give your family and friends extra love.

November 17, 2008 at 12:55 p.m.Ooh, I'd love to win this. I wanted it for Christmas last year, but Santa didn't deliver, lol ;)
My tip: Have extra batteries on hand! You know how you're sure your camera has batteries in it? Well, they will let you down! You don't want to miss out on a great moment by clicking the shutter to find out the camera is dead, or have to fumble around checking the tv remote and any other darn appliance you can find that may have batteries in it. Like the Boy Scouts say, be prepared! :)
Thanks so much!
Heidi
November 17, 2008 at 1 p.m.We blog about the events throughout the day. We have family & friends abroad, some in the military, and it's a fun way for them to check in and see what is happening as the extended family gathers. We can also upload video to tell them we miss them and let them see photos of the kids.
Thanks for the chance to win!
Brandi M.
November 17, 2008 at 1 p.m.For one of our first family vacations, we took our laptop. Each night I was able to type a quick paragraph about what happened that day. When I went back to look at pictures, I had the narrative for each day!
Jennifer Barnett
November 17, 2008 at 1:04 p.m.I make sure to pass the camera around so that everyone gets in the photos or videos. Too often the photographer gets left out.
Aimee
November 17, 2008 at 1:09 p.m.My favorite tip is not to wait for the "perfect" photos or to have everyone always looking at the camera smiling. You'll capture some real, lovely, interesting pictures that will be so much fun to look back on!

November 17, 2008 at 1:35 p.m.We always have big gatherings for the holidays and I try to get as many pictures and as much video as possible. I usually like to edit the video and create 'holiday' dvd's to share with the family. I scrapbook the pictures (although that is dedicated more to our kids). I never get enough video though... this is a great giveaway! Thanks for the entry.
Megan
November 17, 2008 at 1:36 p.m.What a wonderful giveaway!! My favorite way to document is with photos....however, it would be nice to video!! Such a neat little camera!!!
Lauren
November 17, 2008 at 1:39 p.m.I think it is important to make sure that capturing the holiday moment is not getting in the way of experiencing the love, family and fun of the day!
Joann
November 17, 2008 at 1:40 p.m.I agree that the best tip is to have more than one person manning the camera. When I was young, it was always my dad so he is missing from a lot of the action. Also, always have the camera on hand but hidden from view that way you can catch those really candid moments when people don't see the camera :)
susan varney
November 17, 2008 at 1:42 p.m.take loads of pictures and make sure you put who they are and date, date, date
Kellie
November 17, 2008 at 1:47 p.m.My advice would be to ask people to take a picture of your whole family. You don't know how many pics i have of just me & my daughter, and then my husband and my daughter. We hardly have any of the 3 of us because one of us is always taking the picture!
Amy Huang
November 17, 2008 at 1:58 p.m.I make sure I tell atleast two people to capture photos throughout the day, that way if one forgets or gets caught up in the action there's a backup.
Kimberly
November 17, 2008 at 1:59 p.m.My favorite way to remember holiday memories is something my mother started when I was little - writing letters to each member of the family the day after Christmas to be opened on Christmas eve the following year. We always write what exciting presents were given, who was there, etc etc
D Kasper
November 17, 2008 at 2:08 p.m.My favorite tip for documenting holiday memories is to keep the gift tags from each present and a scrap of the wrapping paper it was in then write the date and gift on the back and put the tags and paper in a scrapbook (with photo if available).
Stephanie V
November 17, 2008 at 2:18 p.m.We take lots of pictures and order prints for our photo album immediately following the holidays. We also try to get someone else to take some family photos so everyone is in it.
Barbara Baker
November 17, 2008 at 2:24 p.m.My favorite tip to share is this:
Take as many pictures as you possibly can. You'd be amazed at how cool those "un-expected" photos remind you of events. Forget the poses; just point and click, that's what I always think!!!!
-Barb :)

November 17, 2008 at 3:04 p.m.Commenters on this blog have unique original and informative ideas. I've learned a great deal in the last few minutes just by reading them. Thank you! My tried and true contribution is to just keep your camera close at hand at all times. When one of those priceless moments presents itself you'll be ready to record it. Thanks for the contest. November 17, 2008 at 3:43 p.m.Keep it candid. The forced staged 'waving at the camera' is boring, boring, boring. You see personality and interesting dynamics when it's unstaged.

November 17, 2008 at 4:32 p.m.With 10 kids and 22 grand kids, and soon to be 4 great grand children there are so many precious moments to capture you cannot get them all. In their presence this would allow me to not miss as many.
Betty King
November 17, 2008 at 4:39 p.m.I dont pick out one certain setting. I just keep my camera with me and snap at unexpected times. This makes for candid shots that I would probley otherwise never notice. Like my two grand-boys studying the details of their Christmas gifts together, heads touching and hearts reacting.

November 17, 2008 at 5:48 p.m.Take some pictures, but also write about it. I used to be so busy taking pictures that I would miss out. Now I take some pictures so that we will always remember it, but I enjoy the moments and day. Having a little Flip Camera would be a easy way to record some of those moments.
Denise Montgomery
November 17, 2008 at 6:04 p.m.Each year I buy a new photo album and start with pictures taken in January and end it in December. That way everything is labled by year and in order that the event/picture occurred.
MF
November 17, 2008 at 6:12 p.m.Don't make the holidays all about taking pictures. Try and capture the real moments not just the staged ones. My mom always wanted pictures of everything and now most of what I remember from the holidays is taking pictures.
Madonnalisa
November 17, 2008 at 6:17 p.m.Every year we get together with my cousins and we try to take a picture of all of us standing in chronological order and there is usually something in the photo that tells you what "year/decade" it is. I guess someone could hold a sign with the year it is. We have been doing this for over 30 years and with the new generation of cousins we started putting the kids/babies in chronological order.

November 17, 2008 at 6:23 p.m.I'm afraid I don't have a favorite way of capturing holiday moments, but I do like taking lots of photos. And I LOVE the Flip, I just don't have one of my own yet. So, watch out for diggs, stumbles, del.ic.ious bookmarks etc etc

November 17, 2008 at 6:37 p.m.My tip is not to get too focused on documenting it all that you're not a part of it. Far too often, I find I get great pictures, but I wasn't in on any of the action. When my kids are older, I'm glad they'll have pictures and video to look back on, but I want to make sure that they have memories of me playing alongside them, not always standing back with the camera.
So get in the center of the action and get pictures/video, but take a break to be part of it. Better yet, hand the camera off to someone else so they can document YOU playing with the kids.
carol myring
November 17, 2008 at 6:41 p.m.Scrapbooking with pictures, receipts, brochures and other odds and ends make for purfect memory lane walks. Like the time my sister and I hiked a trail in Alaska. Where a momma bear and cub had been seen earlier in the day. We had chocolate in our pockets (DUH). Our memory book showed us in a hollow tree trunk with the caption of I think I saw a bear.

November 17, 2008 at 6:50 p.m.I think the best thing to remember is to charge your batteries ahead of time or buy enough so if your camera batteries die, you have some spare! There is nothing worse than having a cute moment unrecorded due to a dead battery!
ANGELA KOHLER

Ginny
November 17, 2008 at 8:14 p.m.Well being a scrapbooker, I love getting tons of pictures & video. There have been times when I have a camera in one hand & a video camera in another. My tip though is don't stress about that perfect picture/video. Make sure to enjoy the holiday, it happens so quick!
Also get some pics & videos before Christmas day & after instead of worrying so much about the actual moment.
I have been known to make my kids act surprised again if I miss a photo though, lol.

November 17, 2008 at 9:58 p.m.Various family members take tons of digital pictures and we burn them all to a disc, which can be copied and shared with all. With the Flip video camera we could add video to our discs.

November 17, 2008 at 10:01 p.m.I always try to get as many candids as possible- they always turn out to be our favorite pictures. Also- ask the kids to take some pictures: they get people to relax and sometimes end up with great (if somewhat crooked) photos!

November 17, 2008 at 10:38 p.m.My tip is to share the job around so that everyone gets to be in the video. We have so many videos that my dad took, and you get to hear his voice, but not see his face. I like to be able to see how everyone changes over the years.

November 18, 2008 at 12:32 a.m.We hire a professional sketch artist to draw each event down - much like those sketch artists do in court when the media is not allowed. We find this to be a more personal, yet still leaves room for the imagination. Oh yeah, and we also take tons of pics and video recordings. haha.

November 18, 2008 at 5:32 a.m.Good morning Debbie
My tips are these:
I always set the date. This helps when we watch the vids bc some1 alwasy asks "when was this?".
I have a journal & I make a note when we record and when we takes pics. When we develop pics I go back thru my journal and write on the back of the pic.
Thx for this contest!
Margaret
November 18, 2008 at 5:36 a.m.My tip is to not try so hard to take posed pictures. The best ones are always those that are taken during a spontaneous moment, often when the subjects aren't even looking at the camera.

November 18, 2008 at 5:38 a.m.What a fun giveaway! We like to set up our video camera on a tripod and leave it running. It leaves us hands-free and you get such a unique picture of what was *really* going on that day :)
For our fall family portrait we set up a big pile of leaves and our digital SLR on a tripod, then use the remote control to take pictures of ourselves playing, throwing leaves, posing, jumping, etc. We get some great shots!
Thanks!

November 18, 2008 at 6:08 a.m.My tip: Turn off the flash some of the time. Pictures shot with a flash tend to look harsh. Without the flash, pictures have a warm glow from the tungsten lighting.

November 18, 2008 at 6:12 a.m.My favorite holiday video/pic tips are to make sure you get a picture of the tree, and one of the tree surrounded by the gifts, before the opening occurs. And instead of trying to make it something that it's not, just record. Don't worry about getting everything, just have a great time.

That's the link to my blog about your giveaway! What a fabulous thing this Flip Video camera!! I am enjoying the rest of your site as well, and can't wait to travel now! :D
Also, you asked for my tip on preserving family memories... I too am a scrapbooker! I love to document the everyday in our scrapbooks as well as the special events. I don't own a video camera, so it's all about the still photos for me. I tend to like to get those goofy moment photos, and encourage the kids to be silly in order to get a GOOD photo on the next round!!
PICK US!!! ;)

November 18, 2008 at 2:01 p.m.I have NEVER had a nice camera since I was a kid and then 110mm was only out. November 18, 2008 at 3:54 p.m.My favorite tip for documenting holiday memories is to bring a few disposable cameras. Besides whatever you capture, others can take their own candid shots and won't be afraid to break a camera or worry about costs. Then you take them and get them all developed and...great memories from everyone involved!
Sonya Sparks
November 18, 2008 at 4:07 p.m.We just take a lot of pictures. I'm technology challenged. Maybe I'll win and I can learn how to use this.

November 18, 2008 at 4:38 p.m.I have a pile of mementos (random scraps of paper from events or from cards), and I have the best intention to actually make a scrapbook! I never have, though, and so pictures on the digital camera then transferred to our computer is all that generally gets done.
Katharine
November 18, 2008 at 4:56 p.m.My best tip is to film everyone while they are doing what they do naturally. My parents always used to line us up and bark orders like directors of a movie. The films are pathetic to watch now, we look like trained dogs. Let the kids run around and rip into thing, get messy and be kids, those are the memories you will cherish some day.
Kristen
November 18, 2008 at 4:58 p.m.My tip, is to make sure the batteries are charged!! I hate when I'm taking pictures and I see my battery warning flashing at me.. ugh! This is a great giveaway!! :)

November 18, 2008 at 5:04 p.m.Here's a tip: Make sure that whoever is usually the one responsible for taking videos of holiday fun gets a break now and then -- and gets a chance to actually appear in a video once in a while too!

November 18, 2008 at 5:35 p.m.My favorite tip is to take candid shots during the holidays instead of just posed shots. The candid shots often turn out much better and capture more memories in the long run.
Kari A.
November 18, 2008 at 5:38 p.m.Since the introduction of the digital camera (thank GOD) we take a picture of every kid opening every present with the name of the giver in each picture. This way I can know who gave what to whom, who belongs to what gift and can easily write out thank you notes... now I know that this isn't exactly what you were looking for but it does help us remember the important part of the holidays and that is giving thanks for all our blessings.
Megret
November 18, 2008 at 5:47 p.m.Digital pics means more taken and less chance of ending up with bad photos (no worries about what develops). AND, we take lots of candid shots -- we treasure those more than the staged, posed photos when it's all said and done.
Thanks! This would be ultra cool to win.

November 18, 2008 at 6:25 p.m.I do digital scrapbooking. Since all my pictures are taken on the digital camera I have them all on hand in my computer. I have software that allows me to crop, recolor, resize and do what I need to do to pictures. I then either purchase digital scrapbook kits or elements or create my own and then make digital scrapbook pages that I print out as well as e-mail to family and friends.
Thank you for an awesome giveaway!

November 18, 2008 at 6:45 p.m.We only see our extended family a couple of times a year, so documenting the holidays is so important when we are with them. I keep my camera and video camera in my diaper bag at all times during the holidays. Each year I take all of the holiday photos and put them together into a photo book for myself and relatives. It is a great way to keep your pics together and for the kids to see themselves grow from year to year.

November 18, 2008 at 7:14 p.m.My all time favorite tip for capturing the holidays is just shoot and don't stop. Some of the best photos and videos are when people are being themselves and not posing. You get the most angelic photos of your children if they don't know you're pointing a camera/video at them. Thanks for the amazing giveaway!
Heather
November 18, 2008 at 7:15 p.m.Tip; Take LOTS of pictures. Digital photography is forgiving, you can take two dozen pictures of the same moment and atleast one will be adorable!
Peter
November 18, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.As noted above - take lots of pictures. Keep the battery charged for the camera and have lots of space on the storage card. Ideally, have a spare battery handy. The moment the camera is somewhere else, you'll miss a great shot. Having a quick camera helps a lot as well - one that takes 5-10 seconds to start up makes for a lot of missed opportunities.
Afterwards, share with family using some photo-sharing site (we like Picasa's online service).
Peter

November 18, 2008 at 7:35 p.m.I know that it's traditional to get a picture of all the kids in front of the tree, but having watched my daughter throw the mother of all tantrums post-gift-opening excitement (and I later found out post-See's chocolate ball, given to her by my brother on the sly) posed pictures are rarely worth the trouble. I prefer to set my camera for indoor shooting, and then just snapping away: during stockings, breakfast, and the great unwrapping extravaganza. (With five kids and eight grandkids, my mom's house is pure, unadulterated chaos.) I wait until the lull between cleaning up after breakfast and dinner prep to delete all the ones that didn't turn out well. Then I ask one of my siblings to take some pics of me so I can say that I was there, too!
Jess
November 18, 2008 at 7:44 p.m.My tip? Whoever's taking pictures needs to start out with a camera in hand. That way if something happens they're ready instead of fumbling in their bag.

November 18, 2008 at 9:04 p.m.it is kind of silly, but we try to have a photo taken every year with our dog and Santa. Usually, it is part of fundraiser for the local shelter. November 18, 2008 at 10:25 p.m.My favorite tip for documenting the holidays is to assign each person a part of the day where they are in charge of the camera. That way there isnt just one person left out of all the pictures because they are the picture-taker.

November 18, 2008 at 10:56 p.m.My tip is to have more than 1 person taking pictures. That way the picture taker isn't always left out of the photos. With several people taking pictures there's a better chance of catching everything that's important.

November 18, 2008 at 11 p.m.I don't waste the time taking pics of unopening every gift, come on, you'll look at allll those later! lol

November 18, 2008 at 11:31 p.m.Let kids take pictures - most are random but some are darling and gives you a whole different angle.

November 18, 2008 at 11:51 p.m.I take pictures at our holiday open-house. I use the best ones and print them in sepia tone. I have a 2x3 rubber stamp that looks like an elaborate frame. I gold emboss the ink and make ornaments for our family tree. Every year it grows more full and we have great reminders of our friends and family that are no longer able to join us at Christmas.

November 18, 2008 at 11:53 p.m.Make sure you take the lens cap off.

November 18, 2008 at 11:55 p.m.My tip is to have several disposable cameras around for people to be able to just pick one up and use when they see an awesome picture. I also like to send my kids around with a digital camera to capture people's smiles. They can get shots that I can't.
Check out my latest article on eHow. It makes a great crescent roll for Thanksgiving.

November 18, 2008 at 11:57 p.m.I find the best way to take holiday photos is to sit quietly in a corner, almost so no one is noticing you. Then go to town with that camera--you'll get some great candid photos!

November 19, 2008 at 12:29 a.m.I would have to say that you want to keep the camera with you at all times because it's always the times when you don't think you'd need it that the most precious memories happen. Like when they say cute stuff or dad and kids just having a ball in the hotel room.
Kelly
November 19, 2008 at 1:01 a.m.One thing I like to do after all the madness is over is take pictures - separately - of each gift and record who each gift is from. Before digital, this would have been cost prohibitive, but now, it's easy.

November 19, 2008 at 2:01 a.m.I have been dying for one of these! My best tip would be to catch everyone at their most natural state, and that means even when the kids are screaming and having a meltdown. :) IMO, those real moments are the ones that will make you laugh way down the road. Better to be real than to have everyone stiff and putting fake smiles on. Just sneak around the room and catch them during random moments of laughter, surprise, joy, and even the tears! :)

November 19, 2008 at 3:40 a.m.Good tips. This is only my second Christmas with my son around, so I am no expert yet. I've just been taking a lot of pics!

November 19, 2008 at 4:16 a.m.I was always the granddaughter that took pictures. I loved to have my camera and i always had good shots of my pics with my grandparents, they are over 80!!!
Then i got my digital...my grandma has complained that they never saw "real"pictures. My camera wasnt working for the last seasons month so i told her that i owe her. I STILL LOVE MAKING PICTURES TO SHARE!!!BUT SOMETIMES WE GET SPOILED BECAUSE OF THE COMPUTER ACCESS...My present to them is some pics that they havent seen, since that little camera screen...Yes Grandma there is such thing as real pictures...:)

November 19, 2008 at 4:59 a.m.I'm a scrapbooker so I carry a camera with me at all times. I like to take candid pictures of the event. At the ended of a day, i jot down some stories about what took place and file them. That way when I go to do the pages, I have stuff to draw upon for my journaling.
Gina
November 19, 2008 at 5:09 a.m.My Holiday Tip is to ALWAYS have that camera with you. Where ever you go, whom ever you're going to be around. That's how you're going to catch the best Holiday moments ever!
Margie
November 19, 2008 at 5:14 a.m.My tip is that sometimes just putting the camera in an inconspicuous spot and letting it roll is the best way to capture some pretty funny moments (though it may take some editing later : ). Thanks for the chance!

November 19, 2008 at 5:27 a.m.We always make an effort to see those we care about, even if it means driving from house to house. We don't do it all in one day, but we'll take a couple days. We catch up...share presents...take pictures...enjoy the moment.
Renee
November 19, 2008 at 5:29 a.m.I like to give hubby the video camera and I do the gifts and trash pickup. We have three and it is pretty peaceful here!

November 19, 2008 at 5:35 a.m.Have your camera and video recorder close by so you can catch all the special moments.

November 19, 2008 at 5:37 a.m.take loads of pics BUT then put them in an album or create something online with them to fully preserve the moment!

Rebecca Buffington
November 19, 2008 at 5:38 a.m.During the year I buy those single use cameras on sale . I get as many as I can and give them out Christmas morning. We always get copies of the pictures everyone takes . Then you make cute scrapbooks out of them. The memories last a lifetime!
Maggie
November 19, 2008 at 5:40 a.m.We take lots of pics and video. I already enjoy seeing my little girl's first Christmas, and it hasn't even been two years!
Tami
November 19, 2008 at 5:41 a.m.We take lots of pictures. I also like to get pictures of my kids (over a few years) at the same age in the same hand-me-down holiday outfit. We have three (soon to be four) kids. It's a nice way to look back over the years.
Tina
November 19, 2008 at 5:44 a.m.I love to video my kids opening presents!

November 19, 2008 at 5:55 a.m.I just take TONS of pictures of everything that goes on! Our video camera broke when my oldest was a baby so the last video I have is his first Christmas. I'd love to win this so I could start taping all of my boy's Christmas's! Thanks for the chance to win!
Jenny
November 19, 2008 at 6 a.m.I would say to have the camera out and ready to catch candids. I try to take several shots of something so I can make a scrapbook page with a few images of the same thing. Or maybe take a shot of each kid doing the same activity and group them together for a cute page or couple page spread.
-Jenny-
Amy
November 19, 2008 at 6:15 a.m.My tip is to worry more about enjoying the moment than documenting it. You don't want to miss your child's Christmas because you're behind a camera. You don't want to forget what they look like without a lens!!
We set up a video camera in the corner and forget about it.

November 19, 2008 at 6:31 a.m.Don't forget about a good old fashioned journal. There's nothing like the written word -- like a well crafted novel, a written description of all the sights, sounds and smells of the holidays are captured far beyond what a picture can tell. Combined together, the memories are priceless!
Elisa
November 19, 2008 at 6:59 a.m.I am bad at picture taking. So I just take a bunch and hope a few come out looking decent.

November 19, 2008 at 7:01 a.m.I think doing variations on traditions each year is a great way to really make the holidays stand out. Then you could photograph each one each year and put it in a scrapbook to reflect on over the years. thanks for the chance!

November 19, 2008 at 7:05 a.m.I love to take lots of pictures of the holidays and video. We try and tape the kids opening thisr gifts every year and it makes a great keepsake.
Sierra Martin
November 19, 2008 at 7:19 a.m.We take pictures of the kids with the things that they received from relatives and immediately send them out to relatives on our cellphones. This way they can see the kids enjoying their presents on christmas morning.

November 19, 2008 at 7:21 a.m.We always take a family picture in front of the tree, it is one of the only times of the year we are altogether.
Lachelle Bodine
November 19, 2008 at 7:24 a.m.My husband is in charge of the video camera and I'm in charge of the digital camera. Our big problem is trying to remember to take the video camera with us on vacation!
Tonia Rowe
November 19, 2008 at 7:32 a.m.Last year my son (age 9) decided to be in charge of the video camera during family events. At first I fought the idea, but after looking at the results I decided that the moments he captured were better than mine!

November 19, 2008 at 8:02 a.m.Ignore anyone's protestations that they are not photogenic and don't try for posed shots. Also, pass the camera around to get different view points.
Staci J.
November 19, 2008 at 8:04 a.m.I make sure I take my camera everywhere with us. You never know when your kid will spontaneously play in the snow or do something that you really wish you had the camera for.

November 19, 2008 at 8:05 a.m.Scrapbooking has energized my kids picture taking.

November 19, 2008 at 8:13 a.m.Make a special Christmas scrapbook that only comes out once a year with the decorations and is forgotten in storage the rest of the year - this means being quick with new photos and ideas for the scrapbook. Get the whole family involved and make it a new Christmas tradition of organizing your recent memories before putting everything away for the year. The other half of this new tradition, of course, is re-discovering and sharing those memories it the following year when the decorations come back out. We did something like this with my family photo albums when I was a kid and I can attest with personal experience that it builds up the anticipation and excitement of Christmas.

November 19, 2008 at 8:49 a.m.My favorite tip regarding documenting the holidays is take LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of pictures (or video!). You never know when you might get the "perfect" shot that you otherwise wouldn't have. So many of my favorite shots have come from the oddest moments!
Thanks for giveaway, I'd love to win!

November 19, 2008 at 11:28 a.m.Since I do not own a video camera except what is on my cell phone, I generally document holidays memories with my camera. A video camera would be GREAT for this!

November 19, 2008 at 11:39 a.m.Don't set the kids in front of a window and hope to get a fabulous picture! Put the window to the side of them, out of frame!

November 19, 2008 at 11:56 a.m.My tip is... always have the camera around you wrist! Because I have dropped my camera so many times! I always take lots of Pictures and email them to family and friends who couldn't be with us.
Meg
November 19, 2008 at 12:03 p.m.1) Keep the camera within close range and at the ready to capture those candid moments
2) Don't let people know that you're photographing them so you can get the most real pictures
3) Get lots of pics of the kids playing with the wrapping paper!

November 19, 2008 at 12:53 p.m.My favorite tip is not just designating one person to take photos/film. Have a few different family members do it. That way you get different types/styles of photos and it's fun!

November 19, 2008 at 1:13 p.m.I always have a camera with me and take lots of pictures...stills. I would love a video camera for the holidays. We always take a picture of the entire family outside in the same spot. I'm in SC so outside pictures in December are no problem. It's great to look back at the past years and see how the kids have grown...and some adults, too.

November 19, 2008 at 1:26 p.m.my favorite tip for documenting holiday memories is to make albums using online photo services that have templates for making hardbound albums, its quick and easy and the books are usually wonderful quality.

November 19, 2008 at 1:39 p.m.My best tip is to simply be quiet and try to be situated where you can see but where the camera or video is not obvious so you can capture the truly candid moments, and do not be afraid to get up close

November 19, 2008 at 2:50 p.m.I LOVE documenting family memories on my blog! I've tried scrap-booking and I just don't have the patience to sit down and do all that fancy stuff to make it look good, and with a photo album, you have to describe each photo's information. If I put it on my blog and write about it, I'M DONE! Love it!
Vicki B.
November 19, 2008 at 2:57 p.m.Each year, family members write down (on little pieces of paper) several things they love about the other family members. It's fun to watch the handwriting change over the years, along with the statements themselves. These pieces of paper are then placed in that year's scrapbook, along with the holiday pictures. Great memories!

November 19, 2008 at 3:15 p.m.I don't think there is a soul in my family that doesn't use a digital camera during the holidays. It is funny to see all the pics when printed and having 6 that look the same but from different people

November 19, 2008 at 3:52 p.m.Everyone will remember the talk around the dinner table (or lack-thereof, depending on how good the food is!) and the oooh's and ahhh's as you unwrap presents. Focus on the softer moments in between those times. Record a conversation between aunts and cousins who have not seen each other since last year. Take a trip to the corner store for some eggnog with your uncle and get something unexpected out of him. Things like that are what make you giggle or cringe when you think of loved ones.

November 19, 2008 at 6:11 p.m.My best tip would be to not talk to people while filming - your voice is always louder and it somewhat ruins the vibe of the video! Just catch everyone else in the moment, don't make it happen, let it happen.
Sammie Pucci
November 19, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.We make sure the date option is on when we take our holiday photos. We then upload them to our computer and then produce hard copy books. The kids get to write any sayings they would like to have printed in the book or add any other designs or drawings. They make for wonderful keepsakes!
