This modern hotel is at the edge of downtown, just adjacent to the Pearl district. That location also places it close to Powells books, and Whole Foods. Rooms are decorated using military surplus and have fun touches like record players. We found the hotel very comfortable, and were able to get a large king room with a huge L-shaped sofa. more

The deLuxe hotel has lovely rooms with a glamourous old Hollywood theme. The deLuxe is a renovation of an older hotel that attempts strike a balance between being a chic and relatively affordable. I think it does a good job. Our double queen room was spacious and pretty (though it had a small bathroom). The decor was nice, and the service was excellent. The staff really went the extra mile to make our stay pleasant. Sheets were basic, not high thread count. Room sizes vary (and some are quite tiny) so call the hotel directly to reserve a room that will work for your family. more

In the heart of Portland's downtown, the Embassy Suites is one of the few central hotels with reasonably priced suites. Rooms are comfortable for families, and this classic old hotel breaks the typical Embassy Suites mold. There's an extensive (and free) breakfast buffet, which I think is a great way to get early risers out of the hotel room while everyone else sleeps in. The hotel is close to the light rail line, making it easy to get around without a car. My kids were thrilled about the easy proximity to Voodoo donuts! more

This hotel has colorful decor that kids (and design savvy grownups) will love. The hotel also allows dogs, and you'll often see them in the lobby or on the way into or out of the hotel. Standard rooms can be small, but we were able to upgrade to a very spacious king suite for a nominal charge. After our stay, the hotel also added a Kids Program more

McMenamins Kennedy School is housed in a nearly 100 year old elementary school, and the classrooms have been converted into guestrooms, complete with chalkboards, large schoolhouse windows, and cloakrooms. Fascinating artwork, a lovely Turkish soaking pool, a movie theater, and an in-house brewery make this school house rock! more

We needed a place to stay that was inexpensive but nice, beyond just "clean" and toddler friendly. This older hotel had all the components you need when you have little ones: an indoor pool, a free buffet breakfast and someone to clear the dishes for you, apples or cookies at the front desk when you check in and a "happy hour" with appetizers that you can take back up to your room & even substitute for a dinner if you are trying to save money (they had meatballs, which were perfect for my 17 month old to nibble on). more

Located on the riverfront and next to the riverfront shops and park, this is a fantastic destination for families traveling with children and even family pets! The Marriott is located downtown with a Trimet station (free!) just outside the door. The Trimet alone is a fantastic activity with a small (or even not so small) child. The hotel rooms are clean, feature a kitchen and sitting area. There's a huge breakfast buffet in the morning (included) featuring scrambled eggs, cereals, bagels, pastries, yogurt, sausages and, wait for it, MAKE YOUR OWN WAFFLES. No 3 yr old worth his or her preschoolerness can resist! Complimentary newspapers as well. more
