In what is certainly the cutest giveaway I've ever had on my site, I am giving away this Hawaiian Minnie Mouse Crossbody Bag from Aulani Resort in Hawaii. These were made for the opening of the Aulani resort, and were not sold at any other locations. I particularly liked this bag because it plays on the fashion for crossbody bags without being too trendy. It's small enough to be used by a child, but not too diminutive for an adult. Currently, these bags are completely sold out, and this style is selling for over $200 on Ebay.
Here's more detail about the purse
- Sold only at the new Aulani Resort in Hawaii
- No two bags were the same & the character placement on this particular bag is excellent
- Depicts Minnie Mouse in Hawaiian clothing, Chip & Dale, and a hiding menehune
- Bag measures 8.5” in length, 8” in width, with adjustable leather strap
- Inside is lined and has zip pocket, two open pockets, and key hook
- Comes with Dooney & Bourke registration card and all tags - perfect for gift giving

This is a guest post written by Kristen Stewart. Kristen is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Parenting, Parents and AARP: The Magazine, and I feel very lucky to have her writing here. Kristen's kids are 13, 10 and 6.
Here are answers to common questions about the Nickelodeon Suites Resort in Orlando Florida. Here are links to my reviews of the Nickelodeon Suites Hotel Amenities and Activities and the Nickelodeon Suites Hotel Rooms
What characters are at the Nickelodeon Suites Resort?
It is clear the target age range for the resort is elementary school-age kids and younger. Among others Dora,
Diego, The Fairly OddParents' Cosmo and Wanda and of course SpongeBob,
Patrick and the gang were all spotted by my kids either in costume walking
around or painted on the buildings. There were a few posters around the
food areas of some of the tween shows like Victorious but the emphasis
was clearly on the younger demographic.
Do I have to reserve a character meal in order to meet the characters?
No. While we found our character breakfast to be a more relaxed setting to
interact (including getting autographs), it is possible to meet them out and
about. We ran into SpongeBob at the food court the first afternoon. Be
sure to pick up a printed schedule of events that tells the who, when and
where of all character meet-ups (along with other events and shows).
Can non-registered guests come to the Nickelodeon Suites Resort for the
day and pay an entry fee?
No. The Nickelodeon Suites Resort is for guests only.
Should I rent a car if i'm staying at the Nickelodeon Suites Resort?
Strictly speaking no. Nickelodeon Suites Resort has teamed up with other
local hotels to offer a shuttle bus to the four main Disney parks (not the
water parks) plus Universal, SeaWorld, Aquatica and Wet 'n Wild. At this
time there are no shuttle busses from the resort to Legoland.
Be forewarned, however, that the shuttles work on their schedule, not
yours. Many days the first shuttle leaves for the Magic Kingdom at 8 am
and the next one doesn't depart until 10 am. The departure for SeaWorld
and Aquatica is only once a day and not until 10:25 am while Wet 'n
Wild's sole departure is at 11:50 am. There is similarly little choice on the
return trip with only one shuttle to take you back to the resort late in the
afternoon.
Certainly shuttles can work but flexibility is key. Also interesting to note
was an employee who said many people arrive thinking they'll use the
shuttle only to show up in the lobby the next day asking how they can rent
a car (the staff can help with coordinating this request).
Any other tips?
We did have one last interesting experience worth noting. On the morning
of our check out (a Sunday) a piece of paper was slipped under our door
offering the chance to stay an extra night for $50. For people with airline
reservations or firm plans back home this kind of last-minute change
wouldn't work but if you have flexibility and want a good deal it might be
just the thing. (I suspect it also depends how booked the resort is whether
they run this special.)

For Eilan, one of the fun things at Aulani Resort in Hawaii was discovering hidden formations in non-obvious locations. I just loved this secret hermit crab peeking out from under one of the manmade lava rocks at Menehune Bridge

Yesterday I gave you the lowdown on the Amenities and Activities at the Nickelodeon Suites Resort in Orlando Florida. Today I'll go into detail about the rooms.
It's important to keep in mind, the Nickelodeon Suites is not a hotel but a resort—777 suites on
24 acres. The upside of this is all the activities I mentioned in my previous
post. The downside is depending on the timing of the visit, there can be
a lot of people there. (In fact, when we went to check in we almost felt
we were at a theme park complete with designated line guides showing
us where to queue up. Even the next night when we needed to stop by
the front desk to pick something up my husband ended up in line for 15
minutes waiting his turn.)
The resort was originally a Holiday Inn until Nickelodeon converted it in
2005. After learning this it made a few things more understandable. While
there are a limited number of 1 bedroom suites and 3 bedroom suites
the vast majority are 2 bedrooms (coming in two configurations—see
the website for specific information on floor
plans). However, the term "2 bedroom" is used somewhat loosely.
The two bedroom suite is a living room with fold-out sofabed, one bedroom with a
door and a third sort of open room type arrangement. There is no door
or curtain to this open room which is obviously where the kids are meant
to sleep (one floor plan has bunk beds, the other two twin beds). We
commented on this arrangement to a resort employee who explained the
issue was there are no exterior doors or windows to these rooms so code
prevented placement of a door on them. As for the curtain he said they
had tried it a few times over the years but they were getting pulled down a
lot so for the moment this is the configuration.
My kids are pretty sound sleepers so it wasn't a big of deal for us but for
kids who wake up easily the parents will be locking themselves in their
bedroom come the kids' bedtime. (Also note the bathroom is accessible
only off the living room so anyone using it will be walking past the sleeping
kids.) One other challenge we had was there was not wireless Internet in
the rooms--and the ethernet cable was, you guessed it, in the open living
room.
Some rooms face the parking lot while others open to the courtyard. We
had the courtyard and while it was great to see all the action as you
came and went you definitely could hear the fun even when inside the
room. Again, it didn't bother us—and the kids' alcove is the furthest from
the windows—but anyone in the bedroom or on the sofabed in the living
room could definitely hear what was going on down at the pool.
The rooms themselves were clean and brightly decorated but the big
highlight was the painted characters! My youngest got quite a kick out of
watching SpongeBob SquarePants in the SpongeBob room…

If you're looking for a peaceful Florida getaway spot then keep looking. The
Nickelodeon Suites Resort is not for you.
But if your kids sing the SpongeBob SquarePants theme until you think your
head might explode, then you've come to the right place.
This resort is all about Nickelodeon. From the bright orange and neon
green colors to the gigantic cartoon faces painted on the top of each
building you will not forget why you came. This is definitely a resort for the
young—and young at heart—wanting to have fun in a variety of ways.
When we arrived it was almost hard to know where to start. By the time
we left we had hit almost everything.
We began the afternoon at the large courtyard pools and water park
enjoying water slides, mini golf and even the mass sliming where people
gather for a countdown before getting covered in green liquid. (It looked
suspiciously like green water to me but when I asked an employee
I was told that the answer is top secret.)
In our time at the resort we also attended a character breakfast with
SpongeBob and Squidward, saw two of seven 4-D movies at the onsite
theater and wandered the arcade. Other entertainment options include
several live interactive shows like Slime Time Live! full of pies and of course
slime. For a fee they even offer a kids' spa complete with hair braiding,
manicures and temporary tattoos.
In the end we enjoyed all of the activities we did. This is clearly a resort
designed for families so there were a lot of kids at the pools but it wasn't
excessively crowded. One morning we went to the character breakfast
which was nice. Several characters visited the table and we were able to
take pictures with SpongeBob in the entry way. The food was buffet style
with a wide variety of cooked-to-order omelettes, pancakes, waffles, french
toast sticks, fruit, bagels, etc. Definitely something for everyone.
It was fun to do the special breakfast once but we were also perfectly
happy with the regular buffet. The choices were a bit more limited
(scrambled eggs already cooked and french toast sticks but no waffles or
pancakes) but my gang still easily filled up on all that plus bacon, potatoes,
cereal, bagels, muffins, etc—and the price was a little less expensive than
the character breakfast.
Note there are other counter food places onsite as well—Subway, Uno
Express, a grill place for sandwiches, salads and hot dogs, etc along with
a tea and coffee counter and even a bar for the grownups. We grabbed
a snack the first afternoon and enjoyed our grilled cheese and hot dogs
(not to mention the biggest container of chocolate milk my kids had ever
seen). It was tough finding a table that didn't have crumbs all over it even
though the place wasn't busy but we did finally succeed.
During our stay we saw the SpongeBob SquarePants and Extreme Log Ride
movies and would have liked to see others if time had allowed. They are
short—the two we saw were between 5 and 10 minutes—but in that quick
time they still made ample use of squirting water (be warned).
The arcade offered a wide choice of games—though buyer beware they use
a point system that worked out to about $1.50 to $2 per game so it
can add up quickly.
All in all for families looking for a fun atmosphere with a lot going on the
Nickelodeon Suites Resort will not disappoint. In my next post I'll give you
the inside scoop on the rooms themselves…

Every year we head up to Seattle's Capitol Hill for trick-or-treating. The neighborhood's 100+ year old homes provide the perfect backdrop for spooky decorations and even dramatic productions complete with kids dressed as monsters or zombies. The pre-dusk hours are for the little guys, though, complete with a neighborhood parade! I thought I'd share some of my shots from this year. Got photos of your own Halloween? Feel free to link to them below.

Personal commitments kept me from attending the LEGOLAND grand opening in Florida last week, but I'm so lucky to have an East Coast friend with kids who was able to check it out and write about her experience! Kristen Stewart is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Parenting, Parents and AARP: The Magazine, and I feel very lucky to have her writing here. Kristen's kids are 13, 10 and 6.
My previous posts offered our personal experiences at Legoland
Florida. Today I'd like to answer some common questions and provide some facts to consider when thinking
about a Legoland visit.
Where is Legoland Florida? How can I get to Legoland Florida?
The park is located in Winter Haven, Florida which is 45 minutes southwest
of Orlando and 45 minutes east of Tampa. On our trip we stayed in
Orlando and made the trip in about 40 minutes. Even on a week day (in our
case a Friday) we did not hit any traffic either direction despite traveling at
what would generally be rush hour times (8:30-9:15 am and 5:00-5:45
pm).
If you are staying in Orlando, another option is the Legoland Shuttle. It leaves from the Orlando Premium Outlets® on Vineland Ave. at 9am on park opening days and costs $10 per person.
How many Lego blocks are used at Legoland Florida?
More than 50 million. Wow!"P>
Should I spend two days at Legoland? Should I stay overnight in Winter Haven?
For our family one day at Legoland would be the perfect amount of
time. We would be able to do everything we wanted to and still ride the
roller coasters multiple times. (Crowd levels naturally will dictate how long
lines are and how many rides you will be able to go on.)
At the moment Legoland Florida is the big highlight of the area though
park officials said they are working on a water park and Lego-themed hotel
and resort for the future. (For people who do want to say in Winter Haven
there are basic hotels in the area—I could see a Best Western from the
Legoland park itself—but no full featured resort experiences.)
For us the drive was easy enough and we preferred staying in Orlando with
the option of eating dinner and shopping at Downtown Disney and taking
advantage of bigger family-friendly hotels.
Has much of Cypress Gardens been preserved? How much
remains the same?
I had never been to Cypress Gardens but from what I understand it had a
southern plantation feel complete with southern belles. Legoland has tried
to pay homage to its predecessor in several ways. A southern belle made
out of Legos greets guests.
The Flying School and Coastersaurus were renovated from roller coasters
that existed at the previous park and a lot of the trees and landscaping
around Coastersaurus were retained to give it a nice shady feel. Island in
the Sky and the water ski show are also holdovers (though the water ski
show is now Lego-themed).
Most familiar will be the actual gardens which are off to the west side
of the park. We were surprised at how little signage there was either
directing people there or even when you got there. There was a big bridge
leading into the area with absolutely no signs at all—we half wondered if
we were in the right place and asked an employee to make sure.
If I have already visited Legoland California, should I make a
special trip to see Legoland Florida?
The answer to this really depends on how much you like Legos and
these particular attractions. There is a very large overlap (probably about
75 percent) so if someone liked them in California they'll like them in
Florida. However, it is not so unique that you'd be getting a truly new
experience for the most part.
What hours is Legoland Florida open?
Be sure to check out the official Legoland hours and opening days for the park calendar and hours. While the
schedule could change it's important to note from November 2011 through
February 2012 Legoland Florida is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
(except during holiday weeks), and that the park is typically open from 10 to 5.
How much does Legoland Florida Cost?
As of this writing, adults ages 13 to 59 are $75 plus tax while kids 3-12 and
seniors (60+) are $65 plus tax. Kids under 3 are free. If you plan to visit the park for a second day, you can upgrade your one day ticket to a two day pass at the Guest Relations.
Parking is $12.
How can I save money on a trip to Legoland?
Before booking a trip to Legoland Florida, do your homework. A number of hotels both in Winter Haven and in the Orlando area have partnered with LEGOLAND to offer packages and deals.
If you are considering a trip to Legoland, sign your kids up for a LEGO Club magazine subscription at two years free for residents of the U.S., Canada, Ireland and the UK). Not only will they enjoy the magazine full of comics, activities, etc but as of this writing it contains coupons to Legoland California so it may conceivably add coupons to Legoland Florida in the future. (The September/October 2011 issue has a coupon for a free child's ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket to Legoland California and SEA LIFE Carlsbad Aquarium.) One last thing to note—the coupon does not seem to appear in the LEGO Club Jr. magazine so be sure to indicate on the subscription form at least one child in the 7-12 or 13+ age range to receive the regular version of the magazine.
If you live nearby, there are two additional options that might work well:
- Consider a standard annual pass at $129 plus
tax for adults and $99 plus tax for kids and seniors. (Other passes with
greater benefits—and a larger price tag—also exist.)
- Check Costco.com or your local Costco for discounted tickets. At this writing, Costco sells a Legoland California pass that can be used for any three days over the course of one year, plus a visit to the Legoland Water Park for $99. Other options or passes may become available over time.
Beware of buying discounted passes online as they may not always be valid once you arrive at the park
Anything else to know?
One last tip to leave you with. Be sure not to miss the Factory
Tour. While "tour" is a little bit of a stretch—my older kids weren't fooled
for a minute into thinking the Legos they saw coming down the conveyer
belt had actually been made onsite—everyone was pleased to receive the
free Lego block imprinted with Legoland Florda as a keepsake.

I rarely ask for votes in the various contests that are available to bloggers, but today I'm making an exception.
I'm nominated for an award as one of the best family travel sites in Red Tricycle's annual awards. I'm currently in the top three. if I win, this would mean some really great publicity for DeliciousBaby from a publication that I read myself. If you have a moment, I'd really appreciate your vote. It's quick and easy to vote, and you do not need to register nor will you be signed up for a mailing list.
